Will you read it?

Oprah's latest book club pick:

Freedom

What do you think? Did you read The Corrections?

I haven't read an Oprah pick yet. Not sure I will start with this one.

(I take that back, I read The Poisonwood Bible, but received it as a gift LONG before Oprah picked it, and read it LONG after Oprah's influence had any affect).

  1. I loved The Corrections and have the new book on my Kindle (haven't started it yet, though). Interestingly enough, we were talking about Franzen in my graduate seminar last night. Apparently he uses a very traditional form of the novel, which the guest speaker (David Shields, who wrote Reality Hunger) thinks is totally lame and dead and boring. I liked The Corrections.

  2. I read "The Corrections" and liked it .. it was a good read. It wasn't earthshaking, mind you! BUT it was worth reading!

P.S. Right now, I can't even THINK of adding anything new to the piles waiting to be read on my task table!

  5. A friend put Freedom on her to-read list a few weeks, but I read the description and wasn't interested enough to add it to mine. That Oprah has picked it isn't enough to change my mind. (I have read maybe a dozen of Oprah's picks over the years - some, like you, before she chose them - but I never read them because of that distinction.)

  6. Honestly I was incredibly disappointed with this pick of hers. Maybe because it was already so hyped in the media so I wanted her to pick someone else deserving of the press, maybe it was because of the 'fight' she'd gotten into with him before, I was just a little disappointed, so no I won't read it. Now, don't get me wrong, I love Oprah and have read plenty of the books she's recommended, not because they've been Oprah book club picks but because I've read them before she suggested them or after like you. Phew, I had a lot to say there!

  7. I'm not sure if I will read it - I don't even know what it's about. This Oprah pick might be more a marketing pick, she doesn't usually pick a best seller (she makes a best seller).

I have read The Corrections and remember it being about family dynamics but not much more. It was good but I didn't love it (it was a little odd if I'm remembering right).

Did you like The Poisonwood Bible?

  8. Don't think I'll read it. I read a few of hers because my book club picked a few. Most are SO DEPRESSING.

  9. I read the Corrections recently and really liked it - I will probably read Freedom too but not because it was an Oprah pick. I do think it would have been great if she selected a book that hadn't gotten quite do much press already.
