Did Not Finish -- The Invisible Mountain by Carolina de Robertis

The Invisible MountainThe Invisible Mountain by Carolina De Robertis

I made it thru 100+ pages of beautiful, if not over written, narrative. The prose was so lengthy, I lost track of the story, characters and dialogue. Then, when I hit a part of the story line that had an 11 year old girl sexually assaulted by a friend of her father's I just had to call it quits. I was really struggling with this book from the get go -- but because the theme was the relationships between many generations of Uruguayan women, I was willing to persevere. I wanted to see if I could find a rhythm and a connection. But once the molestation occurred, I was done.

This book required patience that I didn't have.

  1. Too bad, I thought it was a very good book. I loved the prose and the rhythm of the book. I'll publish my review sometime next week.

  2. I appreciate your honesty...so few bloggers admit when they give up. I understand your reasoning...life is too short to continue to read something that disturbs us. And you probably knew intuitively that it wasn't going to get better.

Glad to have found your site...

  3. MOLB:
My initial thoughts of this book were how lyrically written it was...but it is on EPIC scale, and it's a book that needed to be thoughtfully read -- and I just didn't have that time or patience at the moment. Look forward to your review.

Thanks for your comments -- yes, I wasn't enjoying it, even though any other time I think I would have. Glad you found my blog.

  4. I had to give up on a book this week also. And it is something I have to review for Amazon. So I really gave it a good try. I have given up on more books this year than I ever have. I think it has to do with blogging and hearing good things about so many new books. I try things that are a bit different, and then end up not liking them. However, sometimes I do that and find something I really do like.

  5. Good for you - I have done this a few times this year. Before blogging I didn't think twice about putting a book down, I just didn't do it consciously. It's okay for us to not like all books!

    Have a great weekend.
